Winter Birds

A couple of birds to finish out the year. I hope to get a little picture recap of the year posted up here tonight or more likely tomorrow since we are going to go play at the Baum's tonight.

Steller's Jay

Such pretty blue feathers on the Steller's Jay. I almost bought the
couple we have in the yard some peanuts, but I'm afraid they
would just disappear in the snow.

Northern Flicker

I'm really intrigued by Flickers. My good friend started
bird watching because of flickers visiting her yard. It really
is amazing how big they are. I hope to keep the pair we have
around our yard and I want to try and create a feeder
for them this summer.

Basketball Time

Winter is here and with it comes hours in the gym watching basketball. Shawn runs the scoreboard and I enjoy tagging along. I help keep track of the fouls, but more so I learn about the game itself. I really wasn't a team player when I was younger and I have to realize that I should have tried more. It always seem like teammates tend to have a good time.

A few poses...

...from the kitty. While taking the before photos of the bedroom (before I paint it red) Mickey decided to give some cute poses. I couldn't resist and he looks awfully striking with the curtains in the background.

Snow and Sports

The snow has returned to Okanogan:

Alas I have no photos. I've been too lazy and cold. Actually it's been snowing and blowing pretty non-stop to the point that I don't really want to take my camera out. I have been reading up on taking photos in cold weather and have learned that the cold will not damage a camera, but the condensation going from a cold to a warm environment is the culprit, along with actual moisture like snow.

Anyway it started snowing Friday morning and as of this morning we have proabably 7 inches, but now the snow is of no concern it is the temperatures. It is in the mid teens now and the wind is suppsoed to pick up where we may have as low as -26 wind chill Monday or Tuesday. Brrrrrr!

Alright, on to the photos:

I may not be the biggest sports fan and I would say wrestling is probably not at the top, but taking photos of the kids wrestling is pretty intense and fun. It is amazing what the camera sees that the human eye misses. I did have someone tell me recently that if you are taking photos and you didn't see something happen, that's good, because it means that you caught the action.

I am also learning how to use my flash. I received a Nikon Speedlight for a wedding present (apparently I'm the important one in the couple hehe) and I have yet to read the manuel to use it properly and learn all the ins and outs. Instead I just sit in the same spot and make little adjustments here and there. So far I think my way of learning is working to an extent. I know I am probably missing something, but the photos didn't turn out too badly.

Fall Birds

After a slight inconvenience of running over my power cord with the office chair I am now back in business. Can you believe power cords for laptops are $80?! There goes my buying of a Christmas present for myself :0)

Hopper is getting along quite well. I think he enjoys being here minus the scary water jug that bubbles and is sure to attack if he turns his back. We have a few fright issues to work out. He'll be taking the long car ride home with us for Thanksgiving, along with the cat. Mickey and Hopper seem to get along quite well. Hopper is occasionally rough and Mickey likes to run by and "tap" him on the shoulder as he passes.

We're going to look at paint colors today for the front living room. I really like color but it is the classic conundrum of being scared to actually paint. I have the colors picked out, and if they don't look right I can just paint over it. We do have to read up or question people at Home Depot about fixing some of the little issues with the wall, but I'm sure it will turn out great.

While the computer was out of commission I got some very fun shots of birds in the backyard. I hung up feeders and suet in hopes of attracting more, but man those little buggers can eat. I've refilled the feeder three times in a week and they chow down every little bit. I haven't taken a picture of a quail yet, but if I just glance up sometimes I think there is a herd of cats in the yard because they are so big.

Our New Addition

Hopper
Originally uploaded by Kendal Jean Photos

Meet the new family member! This is Hopper. We just adopted him yesterday, so far he is an amazing dog. He is house trained, crate trained, leash trained, gets along great with the cat and is a complete sweet heart. It is amazing what you can get from a pound puppy. Hard to believe he came into the shelter as a stray. Someone spent some time with him, or he is just a great mellow dog with a tail that never stops.

Better Late then Never

Almost a month has gone by and I just haven't had the time to be doing anything but work, move and work some more.

We successfully collected a trailer load of furniture on the coast and now we even have a new bed. We now officially have a guest bedroom with a bed and not just a futon. Ready to visit? The house looks like a home now. Paint still needs to go up and I have lots of ideas and I really want to put some color in without being too obnoxious. Anyone want to help pick colors?

Hopefully we'll get around to having a little housewarming party too. I had friends over this last weekend to break the entertaining spell. I've never thrown a party with people other then my closest friends, but I promise, there will be one soon. What day works for you?

I'll leave you with a cute picture. I tried to get one more in focus but the cat quickly became antisocial and didn't want to participate anymore, I can't imagine why :0)

Sports Photos are here...

Finally getting around to editing some photos from last month. We headed out to a girls' soccer game one evening. It was pretty nice and fun to watch. I'm not a huge fan, though I really think I should be. I love hockey and soccer kind of seems like the same non-stop idea. Oh well. Maybe it is just because I don't understand the rules.

This last weekend was a busy one. Now that we are semi-settled in the house it is onto projects. We replaced a rotten board outside the sun room, added some flashing and re caulked the windows. Inside we painted the cement wall of the sun room to keep moisture from leaking through. I have pictures of everything, but I doubt I will bore you with all of them. It will be fun to look back at what we have changed over the years though. Maybe you'll get at least a before and after.

We head over to the other side this next weekend to get furniture for the house. I'm excited to get some nice stuff. Shawn's Grandpa lives in a retirement home, but the family kept all the furniture so we get to go through the storage unit and pick out what we would like.

Exciting times!

Moved In

Alright I usually don't do this big of posts, but hey a new house is an occasion. So here it is. We got everything moved over Saturday morning with the help of some great people. Everything was here in less then four hours. It was organized chaos getting it all moved around the house though. Shawn's folks came over Saturday afternoon and with their motivation we got the kitchen unpacked, living room sort of set up, the fridge moved and leveled, curtains up in the main bathroom and a tree cut down. Quite a list in 48 hours to accomplish. We are marginally settled in. Boxes still all over the place but we have to paint just about every room, so no knick knacks on the shelves yet. As of this evening we are now connected to the outside world as well. Phone, internet and tv are all happy and working. I'm very excited to say I now have the RFD channel that has all the horse programming on it... yeah!

Okay on to the pictures...

View from the front door to the kitchen. The living room is to the right.

The living room from the entry. You can see into two of the bedrooms the third door is just off the picture to the top right of the room.

The fireplace in the living room.

The beautiful front windows in the living room.
Nice view of the mountains too.

The kitchen. Laundry to the left, hallway to bedrooms to
the right and the window opens into the sunroom.

Yes, the fridge :0) Down the hall is the main bath, a bedroom
and the doorway goes back into the living room.

The main bathroom. This was completely remodeled over the summer.

Laundry room. To the left is the family room and ahead is the sunroom.

The very fun sunroom. We are going to use it as a dining area.

Sunroom from the door from the laundry room.

Bedroom one.

Bedroom two with a lot of built ins. Can't you just
see all the model horses up there?

Bedroom three.

The family room with half-bath.

The half-bath.

Come back soon for more pictures. I have OKHS girls soccor and varsity football coming.

Parade of Champions

On the last day of the fair, before the crowning of the new queen all the champions and reserve champions from the past few days line up on the track for a little parade. It's fun to see all the winners being so proud of their accomplishments.

The youngest riding competitor at I think 22 months. Baby T better start practicing.

The bottle babies were the cutest! They are so gentle the littlest kids can handle them.

And the last bit of racing. Shawn knows one as a student and the other is the daughter of a friend.

The big move is coming too. We close on our house next Friday. I do plan on getting pictures of everything before we fill it with all our stuff. Look for them around the beginning of October. It's an exciting time.

Off to the Races...

One of the highlights of the Okanogan fair is the horse races. I said it last year and I'll say it again, this is how horse racing began. Go back to the county fairs all over the country (and world really) and there have always been races. A whole breed developed because of the county fair races. Quarter horses were specifically bred to be able to race on the short tracks at the fairgrounds.

Of course the fair also includes the fun races. One of the cutest by far is the Half Shetland pony races. It reminds me of my friend and I breaking out her little shetland pony, Sassy. The only reason she couldn't buck was that I could almost reach the ground with my legs :0)

This little pinto led the way until the little girl
slid off. She got back on and finished though.

The pony express races are by far the most exciting. The image below is after the first lap and the jockey is jumping off her first horse to vault on to her second horse standing by. It is one wild race and you never know what is going to happen.

In the 17 and under race on Saturday afternoon there was an accident while switching horses in the Pony express race. Although the image is small the jockey got caught underneath the hooves of one of his horses and had to be taken off the track by ambulance.
